CERAMICS FROM BIZEN AND SETOUCHI, OKAYAMA PREFECTURE, JAPAN
Salon Art + Design New York 2026Onishi Gallery is pleased to present ceramics from Bizen and Setouchi at Salon Art + Design, taking place November 4–8 at the historic Park Avenue Armory.
The story of Bizen ware begins some 900 years ago, when local artisans began producing large vessels from iron-rich clay, firing them over long periods to develop distinctive textures and colors through the unpredictable effects of flame and flying ash. By the sixteenth century, Bizen ware had captured the attention of influential tea masters shaping the traditions of chanoyu (the Japanese tea ceremony). In response, Bizen’s potters created tea utensils that remain prized for their natural kiln effects, earthy textures, traces of the maker’s touch, and varied coloration.
Neighboring Setouchi City is home to distinct ceramic traditions, including Mushiage ware and Sueki. Developed under samurai patronage during the Edo period, Mushiage ware is known for its delicate forms and softly colored glazes, including those made with pine ash. Its quiet refinement has long made it particularly suited to chanoyu.
Setouchi’s ceramic heritage reaches further back through Sueki, an ancient tradition that helped lay the foundations for Bizen ware. Produced at the city’s historic Sabukaze kilns during the seventh and early eighth centuries, these high-fired vessels reflect a rich legacy of pottery making. Today, local ceramic artists are reviving Sueki techniques, connecting this ancient heritage with contemporary expression.
